Thomas James Sunick, 92, of Scranton, passed into eternal life peacefully at home with his family by his side on Feb. 11, 2021. His wife of 62 years is the former Catherine (Kay) Grier. He was born in Scranton on Oct. 19, 1928, son of the late Stephen and Mary Duchak Sunick. He was educated in the Scranton School District.
Tom was a skilled machinist working for Tobyhanna Army Depot for over 30 years until retirement. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Korean War Ambassador for Peace Medal. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3451, Tom was an active member of the former St. John the Evangelist Church in Scranton until its closing, and later St. Paul of the Cross Parish.
Tom could fix anything and was always there to help when someone needed him. Before Google, there was ASKTOM.com. He enjoyed any type of work with his hands making every project an object of perfection. You could always find Tom looking at books about trains and automobiles. He loved the nostalgia of the days of trains. His happiness was his family. He loved telling stories, some true and some not so true. His sense of humor and caring will definitely be missed.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Miller, New Jersey; a brother, Albert (Beverly), Florida; children, Kathleen and husband, Paul Kamor, Duryea; Dr. Mary Beth Sunick and husband, Tristan Sutrisno, Scranton; Ellen Mason, Scranton; and Thomas Jr., Olyphant; grandchildren, Jonathon, Lauren and Brenden Kamor, Stephanie Matthews, Brian Clifford, Ryan and Stephen Mason, Maria and Marissa Sunick; great-grandchild, Connor Matthews, "the little guy"; also several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Michael, Stephen and Joseph Sunick, Marie Snee, Anne Judge and Sophie Kaiser.
A very special thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart and his home caregivers Elle and Jean for their compassion and caring in his last months of life. Also, the beautiful people of the Green Ridge Apartments who always provide friendship.
The funeral will be Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church at St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, PA 18505, celebrated by the Rev. Scott Sterowski, pastor, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, PA 18505. Masks and social distancing will be required and due to capacity limitations we ask that you limit time spent with the family and expect delays. Those planning on attending the Mass on Monday are asked to proceed directly to the church.
